Where free proxy lists come from
Nobody donates fast, clean proxies to strangers for free. The IP:port lists you find on public sites are built by mass-scanning the internet for open proxy ports. What lands on the list is a mix of:
- Misconfigured servers — someone left a proxy port open by mistake. It dies as soon as the owner notices the traffic.
- Compromised devices — routers and IoT boxes hijacked by botnets, resold or exposed. Using them makes you traffic-share with malware.
- Honeypots — proxies run specifically to log what passes through them: credentials, cookies, sessions.
- Trial nodes — deliberately published by providers, throttled to be barely usable.

Does a proxy scraper solve this?
A proxy scraper is a tool that crawls the public lists automatically, tests each entry, and hands you the ones that responded. People reach for one after the third dead list, and the logic is sound — automate the tedium instead of clicking through IPs by hand. Free proxy scrapers exist for every platform, and the paid ones mostly wrap the same sources.
What it fixes: you stop wasting time on dead entries, because the tool filters them before you see them. What it cannot fix is where those IPs came from. A scraper checks whether a proxy responds, not whether it is a hijacked router, a honeypot logging your session, or a range already blacklisted by the site you are targeting. Run one for an hour and you typically end up with a handful of live IPs that are slow, shared with everyone else running the same tool, and refused by any destination that scores IP reputation.
So a scraper is genuinely useful for exactly one job: assembling throwaway IPs for low-value, high-volume requests against sites that do not care who is asking. For anything with a login, a session or a payment in it, the tool is solving the wrong half of the problem.
Why most entries are dead in hours
A fresh public list starts decaying the moment it's published. Thousands of people hammer the same IPs simultaneously, so working entries get overloaded within minutes; owners of misconfigured servers close the port; target sites blacklist the IP after the first wave of abuse. Independent testing of public lists consistently finds the majority of entries dead on arrival, and most of the “working” remainder too slow to load a modern web page.

The part nobody reads: what a free proxy sees
A proxy is a man-in-the-middle by design. Whoever runs the endpoint can log every unencrypted request, strip HTTPS upgrades, inject ads or scripts into pages, and harvest any credentials sent through plain HTTP. With a paid provider you have a company, a policy and a reputation on the line. With a random IP from a list, you have an anonymous stranger — sometimes one who set the trap on purpose.
There is one test worth running before you trust any free IP: connect through it and open our IP check and leak test.
