Why the category behaves this way
These sites are free, and serving other people's web traffic is not free. Bandwidth gets paid for with advertising, and the more popular a site becomes the heavier the monetisation has to get. Meanwhile popularity is exactly what puts the domain on filter lists. What to do instead, honestly
- School-owned device? Web proxies are your only route, treadmill included. No paid product fixes a device you do not control, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling you something.
- Your own phone or laptop? Route the whole device. A tunnel is not a website, so there is no domain for a filter to blacklist, and it carries video and apps rather than a single rewritten tab.
- Need a specific country? That is where a private proxy beats a general tunnel — you pick the exit location and keep it.
